Trooper hit, suffers severe injuries in semicrash

Drivers need to pay attention, especially when emergency personnel are nearby. They may be warning them about hazards up ahead or be helping victims of serious accidents.

When others don't pay attention, they put emergency teams in danger. A state police trooper was hit and seriously hurt when a semi-truck collided with him at the scene or another incident. There were three Illinois State Troopers at the scene on Interstate 55, responding to a call involving a vehicle that had gone off the roadway and hit a light pole. The pole fell and blocked the lanes of the interstate. Before troopers could arrive, another seven vehicles collided with the pole.

Two troopers stopped close to the pole, while the third parked back to provide notice to motorists. It was the third trooper who was leaving the vehicle when he and his vehicle were struck by the semi.

The incident draws attention to Scott's Law, which requires motorists to move over and slow down when they see parked ambulances, squad cars and fire engines with their emergency lights on. The law also requires vehicles to move over when they see any vehicle in lane or out of lane with hazard lights on.

People who violate the law face fines of up to $10,000 and can lose their licenses. Since this may be a criminal case, it's important to note that criminal cases do potentially have more severe penalties that other Scott's Law cases.

This incident brought the total number of troopers hit by motor vehicles up to 14 for 2019. It happened just three days after an incident were a trooper was hit.
