Protecting The Rights Of Injured People In Hyde Park Since 1986

Suicidal man causes serious crash on Dan Ryan expressway

Car crashes don't always happen the way you'd expect. In most instances, you might think that a driver was distracted or looking away from the road when the collision occurred. However, there are times when people intentionally take steps to harm themselves or others, leading to injuries.

Take, for example, a case from Chicago in which a man was attempting to harm himself and ended up causing a serious collision. The man was walking on an overpass above Dan Ryan Expressway when he suddenly jumped into the roadway and into oncoming traffic.

The police received a called at around 9:30 p.m. for the allegedly suicidal man. When he was on the highway, he was first in the median, but he quickly ran in front of an oncoming vehicle. This led to the man getting hit at a high speed and being thrown into the air.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and were able to rush the man to Stroger Hospital where he was stabilized. He was in serious condition following the collision but was expected to survive. He reportedly told the investigators who were looking into the crash that he was trying to hurt himself when he walked into traffic.

This type of situation is a little unusual, but it's one where victims inside a motor vehicle need to know their rights. Even if they did harm a pedestrian, intentional actions leading to a crash are generally the fault of those who run into the roadway, especially on high-speed roadways such as expressways and highways. If you're hurt by another person who is intentionally trying to harm themselves or others, you have a right to make a claim.
