Bleacher safety: Owners have a responsibility to guests

No matter what time of year it is, there are usually functions that require people to go into stands or onto structures for seating that could be dangerous under certain conditions. Property owners of schools, theaters or other facilities using bleachers or stacked seating systems need to make sure they're maintained and safe for those who use them.

Injuries happen on bleachers, specifically, because of a number of issues. For example, these usually don't have railings, so people could easily fall down the stairs. If there are not rails between rows, people could fall onto those seated below them.

If the seats are too high and there are gaps between them and the footboard, there is a risk that children could fall through to the ground below. There is also a risk of getting pinched or trapped in the bleachers.

How can property owners keep bleachers safe?

It is very important to make sure that the bleachers are inspected regularly. Doing this makes sure there are not rusted parts or bolts coming out, for instance. For bleachers with large gaps, it's also possible to add mesh or railings to make those gaps smaller. It's advised to make gaps smaller than four inches in any direction since the measurements used for safety take into consideration the size of a baby's head. If the gap is bigger than four inches, a small child has the potential to become trapped or to fall through the gap.

People seated in bleachers shouldn't have to worry about their safety. With regular maintenance, property owners can keep their bleachers safe.
